Byron Bay is a favourite holiday destination for travelling with kids and boasts stunning scenery, a strong food scene and loads to see and do. The vibe in Byron on any given day sees a seamless blend of families, eco travellers, backpackers and luxury jet-setters which sets the picture for this quintessential Australian coastal town. I recommend at least three nights in Byron if you have the time but you could easily spend a week or two exploring and relaxing in this region.
Best Things to do in Byron Bay
Simply put this is one of the most magnificent coastal walks in Australia as it winds around the peninsula where the Byron Bay lighthouse is located through rainforests and clifftops affording amazing views back over Byron Bay beaches and out over the ocean. The Cape Byron Walk is also definitely achievable with kids at only 3.7kms though there is a reasonable amount of up and down hill climbing.
Allow a half day for this walk as there are plenty of places to stop along the way for a picnic, a swim at Clarke's Beach or to take loads of photos particularly from the Captain Cook lookout and Byron Bay lighthouse. There are some facilities along the way such as taps and bathrooms however parking can be tricky in the area so to avoid the crowds head off early in the morning or later in the day.
Check out some beautiful Byron photography including the Lighthouse before your trip to get you inspired.
I loved this place as a simple, relaxing place to take the kids. Rustic and interesting, the kids enjoyed wandering around to look at the animals, playing on the farm machinery and sampling from the scrumptious on-site bakery (okay so it was me that loved that bit!)
There is also an onsite restaurant and they run some school holiday activities if you happen to be visiting then.
Byron Bay Beaches
Of course most people visit Byron Bay simply to soak up the long warm days on any of the beautiful beaches that surround the town. Main beach is a great choice to be close to playgrounds, facilities and shops or move a little further afield to Clarkes or Belongil for some more serenity. If your family is feeling a little more adventurous why not give surfing in Byron a go?
Whilst we are on the topic of adventure. There probably isn't a more scenic location to go on a sunrise hot air balloon adventure. Drift over the green valleys and shimmering beaches to soak in the magic of Byron from the air.
People Watching
Byron Bay is just inexplicably cool, and the village is filled with a really eclectic and interesting mix of people so hanging out with a drink and taking in the scene is part and parcel of a visit here and can be highly entertaining.
If you happen to be around on the first Sunday of the month you should stop in at the Byron Bay market for its bustling energy and offbeat entertainment. Filled with local produce, art and crafts the markets are bustling with energy and there are plenty of local musicians entertaining the crowds.
Byron Bay Cookies
For those of you in the cookie know (parents in general!), Byron Bay cookies are some of the all-time favourites for kids. Drop into the Byron Bay cookie shop in the centre of town to shop their products and even pick up a bag full of the 'seconds' which is a mix of all the cookies that didn't quite come out of the oven right!
Byron Bay Family Accommodation
We stayed in these apartments for our Byron Bay holiday and loved the peaceful location and family friendly facilities. With a family sized pool, tennis court and spacious apartments this place was a great find in Byron away from the hustle and noise of the main town.
Want to luxe it up in Byron Bay but still be comfortable as a family then check this place out. With large villa style accommodations and all the luxury trimmings including a beautiful pool area and a stroll through nature to reach the beach this place gets rave reviews.
Beautiful resort style lodgings with reasonable prices located a short direct stroll to the beach. Another resort that receives outstanding reviews for its customer service and chic style.
Don't let the name of this one fool you. A beautiful private holiday rental with your own pool might tick all your boxes.
If a character filled but stunning holiday home is more your thing check this place out.
